Fundations - Unit 4

Unit 4 (2 weeks)

Bonus Letters - ff, ll, ss

The children will learn the bonus letter rule.

At the end of a one syllable word, if the word has one vowel immediately followed by an f, l or s at the end, double that consonant.

The extra f, l or s is considered a bonus letter because it is extra. It does not make a sound. The word "miss" for example, has 3 sounds since the bonus letter "s" does not make a sound.

Sometimes the letter "z" does not get doubled (quiz, whiz, Liz) and sometimes it does (fuzz, buzz, fizz). We do not consider "z" a bonus letter.

The glued sound "all" will be introduced in this unit as well.

Punctuation: exclamation point "!" will be introduced.
